We all love the gentle kiss from the sun providing natural highlights to our hair, but it’s important to keep things hydrated and rejuvenate any damage. In this fun DIY recipe, we combine two powerhouse herbs Rosemary and Mint to create a hot oil treatment that will nourish your hair back to health, restoring moisture, luster and shine.
A Little About the Herbs
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is known as an oil of protection. Like many botanicals, rosemary has quite a few different chemotypes, which in a phenomenon where the exact same species of plant, produces distinct chemical differences – thus each one has its own therapeutic profile. Factors such as heat and elevation can create these differences. This is especially present in the Lamiaceae family (basil, thyme, lavender and rosemary are all members). Located in the Northwest, Rosemary grows abundantly, thriving in our temperate climate. When applied over the scalp rosemary essential oil helps stimulate hair growth. Many people also claim that it can prevent baldness, slows graying, and can be used to treat dandruff and dry scalp.
Mint (Mentha longifolia) is also a genus of plants in the the Lamiaceae family and is known widely for its variety of uses in the botanical world. Mint was originally used as a medicinal herb to treat stomach aches, but is now used for a plethora of treatments from teas and tinctures to aromatherapy. Mint also grows abundantly in our great Northern region with many different varieties to choose from for your home garden. Mint Essential oils can help stimulate hair growth because of its ability to increase blood circulation around the scalp. When blood is flowing, the nutrients from your body can feed your hair follicles more effectively.
When choosing your essential oils, it’s important to note that the efficacy of the oil(s) are directly linked to their purity. Oils that have been adulterated with synthetics lose their therapeutic value. Any pure essential oil should list the botanical name and country of origin on the bottle/packaging. The extraction method should be specified as well. Choose wisely and invest in your oils!

Rosemary Mint Hot Oil Treatment
- Stovetop Pot
- Stir Stick
- ½ Tbsp. Organic Jojoba Oil
- 1 ½ Tsp. Organic Almond Oil
- 1 ½ Tsp. Organic Avocado Oil
- 1 ½ Tsp. Organic Shea Oil
- 6 Drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
- 2 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
- This recipe makes one 1oz. application.
- Combine jojoba, almond, avocado and shea oils in pot.
- Stir on low heat until all ingredients are evenly blended.
- Remove from heat and stir in essential oils.
- Wrap a towel around shoulders and apply warm oil to hair with hands.
- Cover with a shower cap to seal in heat.
- Let sit for 15 minutes.
- Shampoo out and condition if needed.
- Style as usual and enjoy ultra-shiny, soft hair.
Suggested use: Apply once or twice monthly for hair rejuvenation and overall health.
